A small clay jug hand made at the Leach Pottery studios in St Ives, Cornwall.
Leach pottery was founded in 1920 by Bernard Leach and Shoji Hamada shortly after they returned from a trip to Japan. Leach pottery was heavily influenced by the Japanese wabi-sabi way, the Arts & Crafts movement and William Morris. Bernard and Shoji built the first British version of the Japanese kiln here on their return and their work is known for natural, subdued tones inspired by the Chinese Song dynasty and Korean Yi dynasty, including Tenmoku (rich brown/black), Celadon (pale green), and ash glazes.
This little jug is a mid century creation by one of the employees under Bernard Leech for the standard ware range. The leach stamp can be seen underneath the handle (pictured)
Overall condition is good, no chips or scrapes just some minor wear from age and use.
